living 15 months off student loans–reasonable in our situation?
I’m a 35 year old stay-at-home mom to 4 kids (ages 1-17) and just started college part time (via pell grants.) My husband is 40 and no longer able to make a decent living in the new construction industry that he’s worked, and thrived in, the last 20 years. He wants/needs to go back to school to change careers, but the school (lineman, which is $80k/year) is full-time/day-time only. This means no income (and unemployment is about to run out) We’ve formulated a plan for us both to take out the max in student loans ($9,500 each) and hope to be able to live off those alone for the year it will take him to graduate. Our mortgage is modest, we qualify for food stamps…. does this sound reasonable/doable?
delerious (don’t know how to reply) the $9,500 each would be from stafford loans, not pel grants.

can’t work–no work experience and am nursing a baby.

the foodstamps won’t be affected because that’s about what our income is now via unemployment.
(….which is about to be cutoff)

Not really. For one thing your loans will be greatly reduced by the amount of tuition, fees, and books for both of you. The school gets their bill paid off the top of ANY aid you both may be eligible for. And the left over loan amounts will never be enough to feed, clothe, and generally provide for 6 people for a year (gas, transportation, utilities, car and home maintenance!) And not to burst your bubble but the food stamp people will require that all of the financial aid received be counted as income which may knock out your eligibility for them.

It would make more sense for YOU to get a full-time job for the year that he will be in school, you’d make much more money.

I dont know if thatll be enough, but as to the question- sure its ok to do. Im in a similar situation- unemployment and living off my loans plus the unemployment- but im single with no kids so that makes a huge difference.
